What I love most about Beirut is that all his songs seem to take you to different places around the world, mostly Europe though. More specifically, Eastern Europe. This is no surprise considering the fact that he (Zach Condon) dropped out of high school to travel throughout Europe where he picked up a lot of his musical influences. This is especially apparent in his debut album, Gulag Orkestar. "Postcards From Italy," from what I can tell, has nothing to do with Italy and more to do with nostalgia and marrying a girl (perhaps one he met in Italy?). Who knows. But listening to this song, I can almost picture myself floating through the canals of Venice on a gondola while Zach serenades me with this song. If only ...
